Daylily leaf

Daylily leaf

I’m constantly amazed at what I find when looking through a macro lens. In most other realms of photography a subject is discovered first and then the camera comes out and technical details dealt with. What I love about closeup work is that images are discovered only through the lens … a world unavailable to the naked eye. And since I’m exploring with the lens at it’s widest aperture, that’s how I prefer capture the scene, wide open. Not terribly interested in lots of sharp detail which tends to pull the experience closer to that of the conventional world. It’s not for everyone, I’m sure … but I find closeup and wide open to be very calming. Here, the white streak is simply a specular highlight on the leaf.
