This well worn little book belonged to my great-great-grandmother. Called a ‘Keepsake Book’, it’s full of handwritten poetry, sketches as shown on the right-hand page above, and sentiments from family and friends. There are entries dated July 2nd, 1863, a time when not 50 miles away, the tragic battle of Gettysburg was raging. Pen to page carries a personal touch, creating a sense of proximity to the past, especially historical events. I doubt very much that 150 years from now someone will look at an email written in 2012 with the same wonder that I feel from these pages.
