How not to photograph ‘Steampunk’. I was pretty stoked about a Steampunk event coming to town last week. Their aesthetic fascinates me and coupled with steam locomotives … what more could one ask for? One of the first things they teach you in photography pre-school is to make sure you have fully charged batteries. I was evidently napping during that lesson because just after I captured these ladies the little red battery thingy started blinking and two minutes later … that was it. Game over. No spares in the bag. Maybe next year.

However I was lucky enough to get some steam from a passing locomotive for the image below. Gotta look on the bright side.

  1. I was in the Lancaster Newspapers building the day Ed Sachs retired many years ago. Ed began his career during WWII as an army photographer and went on to a very successful career at LNP. He had one last inconsequential assignment — the mayor was doing something — went out, shot it, came back to develop his Tri-X and the camera was empty. He forgot to load it. Everybody had a good, genuine laugh, including Ed.
